Chapter 12

In this chapter, Amir and Soraya starts to converse more. They talk about their future career choices and things that has happened to them in the past. Soraya tells Amir a story about her childhood which I thought was very similar to his with Hassan. Soraya has a friend named Ziba.Ziba was illiterate, just like Hassan, which caused Soraya to write her sisters letters. Soraya would teach her the “alef-beh”, teach her how to read, and teach her how to write. She received a lot of joy from knowing that she has made a change in someone else’s life. When I think of this story , I think of how Amir would tease Hassan for not understanding words and used his literacy to ridicule him. He would try to make Hassan feel bad for not understanding instead of helping him. A main event in this chapter is when Baba found out he had cancer. It is possible that he could have lung cancer since he smokes Amir was so worried that he started to envy the mullah’s faith and certainty. I could understand where he is coming from. When something like this happens in someone you are close with life , you will start to question God why and possibly stray away from him. The doctor offered Baba chemotherapy, but he turned it down. Eventually Baba’s sickness started to show. He would get very tired and wouldn’t do the things he used too. He had a seizure in the flea market due to the cancer metastasized. Even after this, Baba still refused radiation. Towards the end of his chapter, Baba recommends Amir to take Soraya’s hand.
